1. Neptune Statue
In 2003, the Neptune Festival requested individuals to send in submission designs for a statue. Paul DiPasquale responded to the request with a clay model that ended up being chosen by the sculpture committee. That statue is known as “King Neptune” – depicting the mythological god with a 12-foot tall rock base surrounded by aquatic features, including dolphins, fish, lobsters, and octopuses.
The large bronze statue is located at the entrance of Neptune Part on the boardwalk at Laskin Road. King Neptune can be found holding a trident in his right hand while his left hand rests on a loggerhead turtle. It’s quite a wonderful sight about 10 minutes away from Bay Colony, Virginia Beach by car.
2. Cape Henry Lighthouse
A lighthouse located at Cape Henry, the Cape Henry Lighthouse marks the southern entrance to Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. The location is known for a massive amount of shipping traffic. The original lighthouse was built in 1792 after receiving authorization from the U.S. government. In 1881, a second lighthouse was built 350 feet away from the first lighthouse.
The original lighthouse has since remained open to the public as a historical landmark. You can climb the stairs at the base of the original lighthouse and have an incredible coastal view from the 360-degree lantern room. It’s well worth the 15-minute drive from Bay Colony, Virginia Beach.
3. First Landing State Park
First Landing State Park was originally known as Seashore State Park. The area offers a range of recreational activities, including but not limited to boating, swimming, hiking, biking, a boat launch, and cabins. You can even camp there as they have water and electric hook-ups and access to restrooms within campsites.
You can find First Landing State Park on the National Register of Historic Places as Seashore State Park Historic District. On a yearly basis, approximately 1 million people visit to enjoy the many recreational activities available. It’s about a 10-minute drive from Bay Colony, Virginia Beach.
4. Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum
The Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum can be found at 24th Street on the Boardwalk. It features a range of fascinating history in terms of coastal communities and maritime heritage in Virginia. There’s a variety of exhibits available, as well as a gift shop along the boardwalk.
The museum is open all year for a surprisingly low fee of $1 per adult, senior or active military member. Children ages 6 and under are free.
